Metrobus to restrict service to major routes due to worsening weather conditions, February 18

Advisory Effective: 2/18/21 - 2/18/21

Metrobus will begin operating on a severe snow service plan beginning at noon today due to rapidly deteriorating weather conditions. Buses throughout the region are encountering hazardous conditions, including icy roads and limited visibility during heavy snowfall. It may be necessary to suspend some routes earlier, if roads become too dangerous for travel.

Under a severe snow service plan, buses will operate on major roads only. Customers should expect delays and increased wait times. Metrobus will transition from a moderate snow plan, with 110 routes operating, to a severe plan with 58 routes in service. All buses in service as of 12:00 p.m. that do not operate in a severe snow plan will continue their routes until the end of the line before going out of service. Information about which routes are affected may be found on Metro’s severe snow service plan.

Additionally, shuttle bus service due to the closure of Arlington Cemetery for the Platform Improvement Project will be suspended as of 2:00 p.m. between Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery. Metro will continue to provide free shuttle bus service for customers at Addison Rd to/from Capitol Heights for connection to the Silver Line.

Customers are encouraged to travel only if necessary, and may wish to consider Metrorail as an alternative to bus. Metrorail service continues to operate on a normal weekday schedule. De-icer trains are running throughout the system to prevent ice and snow accumulations, and switch heaters have been activated.

Additional service changes may be necessary based on weather events throughout the day. Metro will provide as much notice as possible to customers; however, limited notice may be necessary if conditions deteriorate rapidly.
