Capitol South Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 3/21/22 - 11/8/22

On March 21, 2022, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the three entrance escalators at Capitol South. The project will replace the current escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

How will this work affect my trip?

The entrance will remain open during construction. Once the first escalator has been replaced and returned to service, the remaining two escalators will be replaced simultaneously. Throughout construction at least one escalator going up, as well as the elevator and stairway, will be available.

Some weekend closures are necessary to remove the old escalators and install the new ones. The station will be closed on:

  • Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 5 am – 7pm
  • Saturday, April 16, 2022, from 5 am – 7 pm

In the event of inclement weather this work may be extended to Sundays for the dates listed above. Check posted signs for more information.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of all three escalators is expected to take approximately 8 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.
