Gallery Place: 9th & G St Entrance Closure

Advisory Effective: 4/26/21 - 9/10/21

Beginning April 26, 2021, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the two entrance escalators at the Gallery Place Station 9th & G St NW entrance. The project will replace the current escalators, which were installed when the station opened and have exceeded their useful life, with brand new escalators that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE, will install the new escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system over the next seven years.

Metro has the most escalators (618) of any transit system in North America, providing access to the transit system's underground and elevated stations and platforms.

How will this work affect my trip?

During construction, the Gallery Place Station 9th & G St entrance will be closed. While these escalators are out of service, customers will be able to:

  • Access the station via the elevator and escalators at the 7th & F St NW entrance near the Capital One Arena.
  • Access the station via escalators at the 7th & H St NW entrance by the Chinese Friendship Archway.
How long will the project take?

The replacement of the 9th & G St entrance escalators is expected to take approximately 6 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.

How can I stay informed about the project?

Additional information can be found on the Elevators and Escalators status page. Customers are also encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts text or email messages to receive project updates and service information.
