Fort Totten Faregate Barrier Review and Testing Project

Advisory Effective: 1/30/23 - 12/31/23

We’ve heard your concerns about fare evasion and we’re taking action. In November 2022, we installed prototype faregates at Fort Totten and our team of experts have been busy testing their efficiency and reliability. Effective January 30, 2023, we will have completed our internal testing and our prototype gates, including one ADA faregate, will be open for customers to use. The modified gates will include:

  • Two swing-door style barriers, which are higher and harder to step or climb over
  • Plastic arches on top of the gate, to deter customers from vaulting over barriers
Additionally, this spring a second prototype will be installed at the remaining gates at Fort Totten. This second design will test the same swing-door style barriers with a slightly different layout. Instead of two swing-doors, this second design will only have one swing door. This layout will require less space and can be easily incorporated into our current faregate infrastructure.

Both prototypes will remain in the station until testing is complete. Once the trial ends, we will determine next steps.

How will this work affect my trip?
As part of the public trial phases, ADA access will be temporarily relocated to the west end of the station entrance, closest to the fare vending machines.

How can I stay informed about the project?
