Weekend service adjustments February 3-5 for rebuilding

Advisory Effective: 2/3/17 - 2/5/17

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of February 3-5, 2017 with service adjustments on four of six lines. Trains will operate as follows:

  • Buses replace Orange and Blue line trains between Foggy Bottom & Eastern Market, see below for details
  • Yellow and Green line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals
  • Red Line trains will operate every 18 minutes; shorter waits between Farragut North & Silver Spring during daytime hours
  • Silver Line trains will operate every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only
Station note: Metro Center upper level (for Red Line service) and L'Enfant Plaza upper level (for Yellow & Green Line service) will remain open.  The lower level platforms at these two stations - serving the Orange, Blue and Silver lines - will be closed due to the line segment shutdown described below.  Free shuttle buses will be available for connections.

Red Line Red Line
Trains every 9-18 minutes | 10:00PM Friday until closing Sunday

Single tracking between Friendship Heights & Medical Center to allow for joint elimination, grout pad rehabilitation, leak mitigation and rail, fastener & stud renewal.

Red Line trains will operate:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont: every 18 minutes.
  • Between Farragut North & Silver Spring: every 9-10 minutes between 9:00AM-9:00PM
Note: Due to the line segment shutdown on the Orange, Silver & Blue lines, the lower level of Metro Center will be closed and there will be no rail transfer available to these rail lines.  Continuing travel will be available by free shuttle buses.

Orange Line Orange Line
Buses replace trains between Foggy Bottom & Eastern Market | 7:00AM Saturday until closing Sunday

Orange Line trains will operate in two segments:

  • Between Vienna & Foggy Bottom every 15-20 minutes
  • Between Eastern Market & New Carrollton every 15 minutes

Farragut West, McPherson Sq, Metro Center (lower level), Federal Triangle, Smithsonian, L'Enfant Plaza (lower level), Federal Center SW, and Capitol South stations will be closed.

Free shuttle buses replace train service between Foggy Bottom and Eastern Market. Shuttles will operate in two patterns:

  • Local - making all intermediate stops between Foggy Bottom and Eastern Market. Please add 10 minutes of travel time for each station stop.
  • Limited - making stops at Foggy Bottom, Metro Center, L'Enfant Plaza and Eastern Market only. Please add 20 minutes of travel time for each stop.

Work performed: Fasteners, stud and rail renewal, grout pad rehabilitation, emergency call box replacement, communication cable installation and ceiling tile replacement. 

On Saturday and Sunday nights, the last Orange Line train departure times have been adjusted.  Trains will depart terminal stations as follows:

  • Last train from Vienna to Foggy Bottom now 10:56 p.m. (29 minutes earlier normal)
  • Last train from New Carrollton to Eastern Market now 11:00 p.m. (36 minutes earlier than normal)

Tap your SmarTrip card each time you enter and exit the Metrorail system. Riders traveling through the work zone will be charged for a single, continuous trip.


Silver Line Silver Line
Trains every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East & Ballston only | 7:00AM Saturday until closing Sunday

Silver Line trains will operate every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only. Customers traveling to/from other stations should use Orange and/or Blue line trains to complete their trip. At Ballston, transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same platform.

On Saturday and Sunday nights, the last Silver Line train departure time has been adjusted.  The last train will depart Wiehle-Reston at 10:35 p.m. (35 minutes earlier than normal).


Blue Line Blue Line
Buses replace trains between Foggy Bottom & Eastern Market | 7:00AM Saturday until closing Sunday.

Blue Line trains will operate in two segments:

  • Between Franconia-Springfield & Foggy Bottom every 15 minutes
  • Between Eastern Market & Largo Town Center every 15 minutes

NoteDue to the line segment shutdown on the Orange, Silver & Blue lines, the lower level of L'Enfant Plaza will be closed and there will be no rail transfer available to these rail lines.  Continuing travel will be available by free shuttle buses.


Green Line Green Line

  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the bus only option.
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.
