MDOT MTA Purple Line Construction: Silver Spring Station

Advisory Effective: 4/13/23 - 5/1/25

On or about April 17, 2023, MDOT MTA Purple Line construction crews will begin work on the new mezzanine that will connect the future Purple Line Station to Metro, MARC, and the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center. The mezzanine will foster better connections for all transit customers, enhance accessibility, and increase capacity.

May 2023
The first phase of work, starting on or about May 1, 2023, includes building a 200-foot-long protective barrier on the far end of the Metro platform to separate the public from the Purple Line work zone. An accessible pathway will be maintained on either side of the barricade for customers to board and exit the train. The barricade will remain on the platform for a year and a half.

June 2023
The second phase of work, starting in June 2023, includes demolition of the pedestrian bridge to the MARC platform on the second level of the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center. An accessible pedestrian detour will be in place along Ripley Street. This detour will continue for approximately two years.

How will this work affect my trip?
Metrobus or Metrorail customers transferring to/from MARC trains will be required to follow a pedestrian detour along Ripley Street. The pedestrian detour to the MARC platform will be accessible from the third level of Silver Spring Transit Center.

Customers accessing the MARC train should allow extra time in their trip to account for the pedestrian detour.

For safety, customers should stay clear of the construction zones in both areas and follow all posted signs.

How long will the project take?
The barricades on the platform will be in place through summer 2024 and the pedestrian detour is anticipated to be in effect for approximately 2 years.

Purple Line construction at Silver Spring Station and Transit Center is expected to occur through 2026.
