Metro service information for New Year holiday weekend Dec. 31-Jan. 2

Advisory Effective: 12/31/22 - 1/2/23

On New Year's Eve, Saturday, December 31, Metro will offer fare-free rides for all Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess customers that begin their travel between 8 p.m. and closing with an extra hour of extended service. Trains will operate until 2 a.m., and selected late-night bus routes routes will run until 3 a.m. 

On New Year's Day Jan. 1 and the observed holiday Jan. 2, Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess customers will be able to travel on the holiday; however, subscription trips will be canceled. All normal fare and service hours will resume Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023 at 4 a.m.

Due to weather related issues to a Metro data center Dec. 25, Metro's Trip Planner tool and real-time arrival information may not be updated to reflect the extended hour of service on New Year's Eve. 

SERVICE INFORMATION

Metrorail

Hours: Sat 7 a.m. - 2 a.m.; Sun/Mon 7 a.m. – midnight
Service:
Red Line Trains every 10 minutes Shady Grove - Silver Spring; every 20 minutes Silver Spring - Glenmont.
Blue Line Orange Line Silver Line Blue Line+ Trains every 15 minutes.
Green Line Trains every 8 minutes.
Yellow Line No service through May 2023. Use Blue Line+ or Green Line instead.

*Metro's trip planner and real time train arrival information may not accurately reflect the extended hour of service on New Year's Eve. Last train times vary by station. Check the station page for last train time and add one hour for New Year's Eve. 

Fares: Sat regular $2 weekend fare, entering after 8 p.m. free; Sun regular $2 weekend fare; Monday, off-peak fares in effect all day.

Parking: Free at Metro owned parking garages and lots with the exception of Morgan Boulevard and Downtown Largo which are subject to Metro's special event parking fees on Sunday.

Customers are reminded of scheduled track work on the Red Line. Trains will single track between Silver Spring and Forest Glen through the weekend, including Monday. 

*Please note: Monday, Jan. 2, Yellow Line shuttle buses will not operate. Customers should use Blue Line and Blue Plus train service for travel between Virginia and DC.  

Metrobus

Hours: Schedules vary by route.
Service: Sat, Dec. 31 - regular schedule with selected late-night service until 3 a.m., Jan. 1, on the following selected routes: 

  • D.C.: 32, 33, 36, 38B, 52, 70, 80, 92, A6, A8, G8, H4, L2, P6, S2, U5, V2, W2, W4, X2
  • Maryland: A12, C4, D12, F4, J2, K6, P12, T18, Y2, Z8
  • Virginia: 1A, 7A, 10A, 16E, 23B, 28A, 38B 

Buses that are in service from 2-3 a.m. will complete their routes, with no new service after 3 a.m. 

  • Real-time arrival information through busETA may be unavailable.
  • Check timetables for schedule information. Add one hour to bus times after 1 a.m. for extended service schedule. (Ex: If the last bus is normally scheduled to depart at 1:30 a.m., the last bus will now depart at 2:30 a.m.)

Sun, Jan. 1 - Mon, Jan 2 - Buses scheduled to operate on Sundays will operate; all other routes will not operate on the holiday. Check timetables for route specific information.

Fares: All regular route Metrobus service is $2; and free when transferring to/from Metrorail. Sat after 8 p.m. free fares. 

MetroAccess

MetroAccess service will operate normal service over the holiday weekend however, on New Year's Day and the observed holiday all scheduled recurring “subscription trips” are automatically canceled. Customers may make a separate reservation to travel on the holiday online or by calling 301-562-5360 (TTY 301-588-7535).

On Saturday, New Year's Eve, fares will be waived for customers who begin their trip after 8 p.m.
