Blue/Yellow lines: Speed restriction south of Reagan National Airport

Advisory Effective: 12/1/16 - 1/31/17

For worker safety, Metro has imposed a 15-mph speed restriction on the aerial section of track just south of Reagan National Airport Station. The speed restriction is in place following an incident last month in which two inspectors were nearly struck by a train.

The speed restriction is approximately 3,700 feet in length as trains make their way through an S-shaped curve south of the station. For most trains, this adds 2-3 minutes of travel time.

Metro's Safety Department is currently working on technology solutions that will allow this restriction to be lifted. In addition, Metro worked with the U.S. Park Service to remove a tree that created a blind spot in the curve.

We appreciate your understanding as we take all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of Metro and FTA employees working in this area. Additional updates will be posted to this page in the coming weeks.
