Looking back at historic Vienna Station photos

Published: Thursday, June 18, 2020

Last summer, we featured a series of throwback blogs showing original construction photos of the six stations that were renovated during the 2019 Platform Improvement Project. With the next phase of the project underway at four Orange Line stations in Virginia, we’re celebrating the history of this year’s stations through a series of #ThrowbackThursday blog posts.

This week, we’re highlighting the western terminus for the Orange Line, Vienna Station.

Open to the public in 1986, Vienna serves commuters with 5,169 parking spaces – the second-highest number of parking spaces at a Metro station (Shady Grove is first with 5,745 spaces). Originally called Vienna, the station’s name was expanded with input from the City of Fairfax to Vienna-Fairfax/GMU in 1999, following the pattern of adding campus names to Metrorail stations. After the 2011 redesign of the system map to incorporate the Silver Line, Fairfax-GMU became the station’s subheading.
