This week for #FlashbackFriday we're taking a closer look at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station, where construction will wrap up this weekend on Sunday, December 13. This station features two outdoor, island style platforms and three tracks, allowing Metro to maintain regular service during platform reconstruction with only one track out of service at a time.

Riders awaiting trains on both platforms can see both the original double curved gull shaped canopies, and the newer single curved canopy extension. Reagan National Airport Station opened on July 1, 1977 as the final station for the debut of the Blue Line. This extension added 11.8 miles of rail to the system between the airport and Stadium-Armory Station. The station opened along with 16 others, including L’Enfant Plaza, Arlington Cemetery and Pentagon stations, to name a few. Throughout Metro’s growth, the station has also served as terminus for the Yellow and Orange lines.

Thanks for reading our series of historic posts about this year's Platform Improvement Project stations! Stay tuned for more photos of upcoming stations in 2021.
