Car Sharing

Through a partnership with Enterprise CarShare, Metro offers car sharing at select Metrorail stations and around the region at locations convenient to Metrobus. You can ride Metro and then pick up a car just steps from the train or bus to run errands, shop or reach any other business or social event not easily accessible via transit.

Car sharing is available in Metro Kiss & Ride lots at 45 of the 91 Metrorail stations (see station pages for locations) and many other neighborhood locations both near Metrorail stations without Kiss & Ride lots and elsewhere in the region. Enterprise CarShare offers several different plans. Register on their website, then reserve and pick up a car when you need it. A range of vehicles are available for members to choose from, including compact cars, vans, pickup trucks, and even some hybrid cars! See the Enterprise CarShare website for further details.

Using an ABWC (Segway) or Non-Conventional Mobility Aid

Segways and other Automatic Balancing Wheeled Conveyances (ABWCs) or other non-conventional mobility aids are permitted aboard Metrorail. ABWCs are defined as battery-powered, non-collapsible, self-balancing wheeled transportation devices. Permitted ABWCs include but are not limited to the Segway brand.

Segways as Mobility Devices

People with disabilities who use an Automatic Balancing Wheeled Conveyance (ABWC) such as a Segway, as a mobility device are exempt from certain policy restrictions. To do so however, you must first become a registered Metro ABWC user.

To begin the process of becoming a registered ABWC user, you must first be a registered Metro Reduced Fare Program or MetroAccess customer.   A physician must certify that the Segway is used as a mobility device on the ABWC registration form . You MUST also schedule an appointment with the Metro Department of Access Services by calling 202-962-1100 to be tested to receive a Metro decal. This scheduled appointment takes about an hour. You will be tested on your ability to maneuver your ABWC safely by Metro Transit Police, and you will be provided information about Metro accessibility features

Segways as Non-mobility Devices

As a non-mobility device, riders must walk their ABWC inside Metrorail stations. ABWC as either a mobility or non-mobility device cannot be transported on the escalator. All ABWC users must use the elevators to enter or exit stations and the platform level.

ABWCs are allowed inside railcars:

• from Monday through Friday at any time except 7-10 am and 4-7 pm
• on the following holidays: Martin Luther King's Birthday observed, President's Day observed, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day observed, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

ABWCs are not allowed in the Metrorail system on Inauguration Day, the Fourth of July, during major marches or during other special events. Unlike bicycles, Segways are not allowed on Metrobuses because they can't be stabilized on a bus lift and can't be secured safely inside a bus.
