Beginning on Saturday, November 25 through Sunday December 10, there will be no Red Line trains operating between Silver Spring and Fort Totten, and Takoma station will be closed to undertake a major capital improvement project. The work will involve the complete replacement a mainline interlocking, a location where trains cross from one track to the other.

During this time, Red Line trains will operate in two segments: between Shady Grove and Fort Totten, and between Glenmont and Silver Spring.

On the weekend of December 2-3, the work zone will be extended to Glenmont to accommodate the installation of radio communication cables and additional preventive maintenance. Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations will also be closed.

During the project, Metro will replace rail ties, eliminate joints, and install 800 feet of new rail along a four-mile section of track. The scope of work also includes upgrading signals, grout pad replacement and the installation of new power cables. This type of project is safest and most effectively executed when both tracks are out of service.

This project, which was announced this spring, will reduce the frequency of trains on the entire Red Line. Customers may experience some crowding and should allow additional travel time.

Highlights:

  • No Red Line trains between Silver Spring and Fort Totten November 25 - December 10. Limited free shuttle buses will be available at all times between stations.
  • Takoma Station closed. No parking available. The Park & Ride lot, Kiss & Ride and all metered parking spaces will be closed to the public.
  • Customers should allow extra travel time and expect some crowding as trains will arrive less frequently than normal.
  • On the weekend of December 2-3, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont will also be closed. Limited free shuttle buses will be provided between Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring. Transfer between shuttles at Silver Spring to continue your trip.
  • 2017 Red Line Capital Improvement Project
