Building the New Northern

As part of our Capital Improvement Program, the garage was closed in 2019 for major repairs, and will be rebuilt into a better and more modern bus operations and maintenance center. Designed to meet the current and future needs of the customers and communities served, the new Northern Bus Garage will carry the distinction of housing Metro's first 100% zero-emission bus fleet when it reopens. Read our press release to learn more about Metro's commitment to transitioning to a fully zero-emission bus fleet.

Design & Innovation

The rebuilt Northern Bus Garage will replace the century-old facility. The new garage is being built to achieve LEED® certification and will have the capacity to house up to 150 zero-emission buses. The new bus facility will maintain the historic 14th Street façade by incorporating a historic marker of rail tracks into the sidewalk at the former turnaround entrance. The reconstructed property will add retail space, streetscape improvements, and a community room. The new Northern Bus Garage will also include environmentally-friendly, sustainable features:

  • An energy efficient HVAC system
  • Solar panels
  • EV charging stations
  • Stormwater collection system
