Metrobus adds Sunday service to Greenbelt, extends Metroway as part of service changes effective March 27

Metrobus will add new Sunday service in Greenbelt, extend Metroway to Pentagon City and provide new express buses on the Z line among other changes that take effect March 27 to improve service and reduce crowding.

The service changes are part of Metro’s Better Bus initiative, a comprehensive effort based on customer feedback to improve reliability and build a better bus experience.

Among the highlights of service changes effective March 27:

  • New Sunday service in Greenbelt G12, G14 between Greenbelt – New Carrollton and C2 between Greenbelt Metrorail Station – Langley Park 
  • Weekday, Saturday and Sunday Metroway service extended to Pentagon City
  • New Saturday service on the Z6 and more efficient service and simplified routes on all the Z lines, including new Burtonsville-Greencastle Express Line
  • Service on the B8, B9 and H6 extended to the shopping area at New York and South Dakota Avenues NE
  • In addition, some Metrobus routes will be reassigned to new bus bays at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

Below is a complete summary of bus changes effective March 27, 2016

3Y Lee Highway-Farragut Square

  • An additional eastbound trip will be added leaving East Falls Church Metrorail station at 7:14 AM to alleviate crowding.

7A, 7Y Lincolnia-North Fairlington

  • The last 7A trip departing the Pentagon Transit Center at 3:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays will be discontinued due to low ridership.
  • The current route 7Y Memorial Bridge bypass routing will become permanent and the routing in downtown Washington will be shortened to begin and end on H and 17th streets, NW near Farragut Square.
  • Route 7Y service between Farragut Square and the Convention Center will be discontinued.

7H, 7X Lincolnia-Park Center-Pentagon

  • Route 7H will be discontinued.
  • Route 7X service to Arbor Park (Southland Avenue) will be discontinued.  All 7X trips will begin and end on Lincolnia Road and Quantrell Avenue in Lincolnia.

16H Columbia Heights West-Pentagon City

  • Service between Pentagon City and Crystal City will be discontinued and replaced by the new Metroway service extension.  

16X Columbia Pike-Federal Triangle

  • The eastbound trip leaving the Pentagon at 6:55 AM will be converted to a full trip (Culmore-Federal Triangle) and depart Culmore at 6:28 AM.
  • The westbound trips leaving 11th Street and E Street at 3:36 PM, 4:06 PM and 7:14 PM will be converted to full trips and will operate to Culmore.
  • The eastbound trip leaving the Pentagon Transit Center at 3:00 PM will be discontinued due to low ridership.

34 Pennsylvania Avenue

  • Weekday service after 9:19 PM and all Saturday and Sunday service will be discontinued.
  • Alternatively, service between Naylor Road Metrorail station and downtown is available on routes 30N and 36.

43 Mount Pleasant

  • The bus stop at Franklin Square will be moved closer to 14th Street in order to be closer to the 42 bus stop on the same block.

53 14th Street

  • The bus stop at Franklin Square will be moved closer to 13th Street in order to accommodate a route 43 bus stop change.

63 Takoma-Petworth

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

64 Fort Totten-Petworth

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

81, 82, 83 College Park

  • All Sunday route 81 trips will be converted to operate as route 83 trips.
  • Route 81 will be discontinued.
  • Alternatively, Sunday service to Greenbelt Metrorail station will be provided by routes C2, G12 and G14. See C2 and G12, G13, G14, G16 sections for more information.
  • Southbound route 82 trip leaving Mt. Rainer at 6:45 AM and northbound trips leaving Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail station at 4:35 PM, 5:05 PM and 6:10 PM will be discontinued due to low ridership.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

89, 89M Laurel

  • Service along Muirkirk Meadows Drive, Muirkirk Road and along Virginia Manor Road between Ritz Way and Muirkirk Road will be discontinued due to operational safety concerns.
  • Buses will operate via Baltimore Avenue (US 1) and Ritz Way.

90, 92, 93 U Street-Garfield

  • Route 93 will be discontinued due to low ridership.
  • Additional early morning and late evening trips will be provided on routes 90 and 92. Please see the 90, 92 timetable for details.

A8 Anacostia-Congress Heights

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

B8, B9 Fort Lincoln Shuttle

  • Service will be extended to The Shops at Dakota Crossing Shopping Center, located at New York and South Dakota avenues, NE. 
  • B9 midday service will be decreased to operate every 70 minutes between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

C2 Greenbelt-Twinbrook

  • New Sunday service will be added between Greenbelt Metrorail station and Langley Park only.
  • Buses will operate every 45 minutes between 8:15 AM and 7:30 PM.

C8 College Park-White Flint

  • The first two weekday westbound trips currently leaving Glenmont Metrorail station at 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM will be converted to full trips (between College Park and White Flint) and will depart College Park-U of MD Metrorail station at 5:41 AM and 6:04 AM. 

E2 Ivy City-Fort Totten

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

G8 Rhode Island Avenue

  • The frequency of weekday westbound service between Brookland-CUA Metrorail station and Farragut Square will be increased to operate every 6 to 8 minutes between 7:15 AM and 8:30 AM to alleviate crowding.
  • The frequency of weekday westbound service between Avondale and Brookland-CUA Metrorail station will be reduced to operate every 15 to 20 minutes between 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM to improve efficiency.
  • The frequency of weekday eastbound service between Brookland-CUA Metrorail station and Avondale will be increased to operate every 6 to 12 minutes between 5:15 PM and 7:00 PM to improve service reliability.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

G12, G13, G14, G16 Greenbelt-New Carrollton

  • All G13 trips will become G14 trips, early morning trips will continue to bypass Beltway Plaza.
  • All G16 trips will become G14 trips which will provide evening and weekend service to Greenbelt Road east of Good Luck Road.
  • New Sunday service will be added to routes G12 and G14 and will operate every 60 minutes between 6:30 AM and 10:30 PM.
  • G13 and G16 route designations will be discontinued.
  • Buses will no longer travel along Forbes Boulevard and Aerospace Road due to low ridership.

H6 Brookland-Fort Lincoln

  • Service will be extended to The Shops at Dakota Crossing Shopping Center, located at New York and South Dakota avenues, NE. 
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

H8, H9 Park Road-Brookland

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

J5 Twinbrook-Silver Spring

  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 218 (upper level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring

J7, J9 I-270 Express

  • To increase efficiency, southbound AM buses will be decreased to operate every 25 minutes and northbound PM buses will be decreased to operate every 30 minutes.

K11, K12 Forestville

·         Buses will be reassigned to bus bay H at the Branch Avenue Metrorail station.

Metroway-Potomac Yard

  • Weekday, Saturday and Sunday service will be extended to Pentagon City.
  • Service between South Glebe Road and 26th Street will operate on the new Crystal City transitway.
  • AM and PM short trips will be extended to operate between Reed Street in Potomac Yard and Crystal City Metrorail station.

Q1, Q2, Q4 Veirs Mill Road

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.
  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 218 (upper level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

R3 Greenbelt-Prince George’s Plaza

  • Route R3 will be discontinued due to low ridership.
  • See route C8 College Park-White Flint timetable for alternative service to Archives II.

S2, S4 16th Street

  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 103 (lower level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.
  • Northbound weekday S2 trips between 10:00 PM and midnight that previously ended service at Colorado Avenue, will be extended to the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

S9 16th Street MetroExtra

  • Buses will now depart from bus bay 104 (lower level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

S91 Springfield Circulator-Metro Park Shuttle (TAGS)

  • The last trip leaving Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station at 7:37pm will leave one minute later.

V14, V15 District Heights-Seat Pleasant

  • All existing V15 trips will become V14 trips.
  • Service along Pepper Mill Drive and Hasting Drive will be discontinued.
  • Sunday V14 service will be extended to operate between Penn Mar Shopping Center and Deanwood Metrorail station.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

W19 Indian Head Express

  • Service frequency will be reduced to 30-35 minutes.

Y2, Y7, Y8 Georgia Avenue-Maryland

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.
  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 219 (upper level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

Z2 Colesville-Ashton

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.
  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 113 (lower level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

Z6 Calverton-Westfarm

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.
  • New Saturday service will be added between Silver Spring and Castle Boulevard and will operate every 30 minutes.
  • New Saturday service will be coordinated with route Z8 between Silver Spring and White Oak to provide a 15-minute frequency.
  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 113 (lower level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

Z7 Laurel-Old Columbia Pike (NEW)

  • New Z7 will replace routes Z9 and Z29.
  • Service will operate every 30 minutes during AM and PM peak periods.
  • Z7 will operate between South Laurel Park and Ride, the Towne Centre at Laurel, Laurel Employment Park, Burtonsville, Old Columbia Pike and Silver Spring.
  • Service along Columbia Pike between Burtonsville and White Oak will be discontinued.
  • Service to and from Blackburn Road will be provided by revised Z11.
  • Z7 will depart from bus bay 116 at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center (Silver Spring).

Z8 Fairland

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.
  • Saturday service frequency will be reduced to 30 minutes to coordinate with the new Saturday route Z6 service.
  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 114 (lower level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.

Z9, Z29 Laurel-Burtonsville Express

  • Routes Z9 and Z29 will be replaced by new route Z7.
  • Service to and from Blackburn Road will be provided by revised Z11.
  • See Z7 and Z11, Z13 sections for more details.

Z11, Z13 Greencastle- Briggs Chaney Express

  • Route Z13 will be discontinued.
  • Route Z11 will be extended from Greencastle Park and Ride to Burtonsville Park and Ride and will be renamed “Burtonsville-Greencastle Express Line”.
  • Service will operate every 10-15 minutes during AM and PM peak periods.
  • Northbound and southbound Z11 will serve Blackburn Road.
  • There will be no changes to bus stop locations along Columbia Pike (US 29) between White Oak and Silver Spring.
  • Buses will be reassigned to bus bay 115 (lower level) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center in Silver Spring.
