Metrobus service changes effective June 21 to add new routes, improve reliability

Metrobus schedules and service will be adjusted on some routes in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia starting Sunday, June 21, as Metro advances its Better Bus initiative and seeks to improve service and reliability for customers throughout the region.

Enhancements to existing Metrobus service include an introduction of new routes and new availabilities of short trips, updated schedules and reroutes to provide faster travel times and improved on-time performance.

Among the highlights of service changes effective June 21:

  • Route E3 service will be eliminated. Route E2 will now operate between Ivy City and Fort Totten Metrorail station. Route E4 continues to operate between Friendship Heights Metrorail station and Riggs Park. Additionally, route E4 will have short trips operating between Friendship Heights and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.
  • Route U2 will be replaced by NEW route V2 and V4. Route V2 provides service between Capitol Heights and Anacostia Metrorail stations. Route V4 provides service between Capitol Heights and Navy Yard-Ballpark Metrorail stations. 
  • Routes V7, V8 and V9 service will be replaced by NEW routes U7, V1, and V4. During the weekday peak period, route V1 operates between Benning Heights and the Bureau of Engraving. Route U7 will operate between Deanwood and Minnesota Avenue Metrorail stations.
  • Metro will no longer operate route W15. It is now operated by TheBus as route 37.
  • Route NH1 will be rerouted to Southern Avenue Metrorail station and will no longer serve Branch Avenue Metrorail station. NH3 trips will operate as NH1 trips.

Below is a complete summary of bus changes effective June 21, 2015:

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

94 Stanton Road

  • Time between weekday, off-peak buses will increase to every 32 minutes.

96 East Capitol Street-Cardozo

  • Service will be rerouted to Massachusetts Avenue NE between East Capitol Street and 1st Street NE to provide direct and faster service.

D8 Hospital Center

  • Buses will serve hospitals on northbound (toward Washington Hospital Center) trips only. Passengers traveling southbound (toward Union Station) may board northbound trips at Washington Hospital Center and remain onboard during a short layover before continuing southbound.
  • The final stop at Washington Hospital Center will be relocated to the west side of 1st Street NW, south of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center entrance.

E2, E3, E4 Military Road-Crosstown

  • Route E2 will operate between Ivy City and Fort Totten Metrorail station.
  • Route E4 will operate between Friendship Heights Metrorail station and Riggs Park. Additionally, route E4 will have short trips that only operate between Friendship Heights and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.
  • Route E3 designation will be eliminated.
  • Routes E2 and E4 will operate on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

K6 New Hampshire Avenue-Maryland

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service

N3 Massachusetts Avenue

  • The first PM trip will depart 12th Street & Constitution Avenue NW at 4:40 p.m.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

P6 Anacostia- Eckington

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service

U2 Minnesota Avenue- Anacostia

  • Route U2 will be replaced by NEW route V2. Routes V2 and V4 will be named Capitol Heights-Minnesota Avenue line serving stops between Capitol Heights and Minnesota Ave Metrorail stations.
  • New service will serve the former route U2 stops between Anacostia and Minnesota Ave Metrorail stations and extend to Capitol Heights Metrorail station via Minnesota Avenue, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, 58thStreet, Dix Street, Eastern Avenue, 63rd Street and Southern Avenue.

U7 Deanwood-Minnesota Ave Station (NEW)

  • NEW route U7 will operate between Deanwood and Minnesota Ave Metrorail stations on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. See section on routes V7, V8 and V9 for details.

U8 Capitol Heights-Benning Heights

  • Route U8 will be shortened to operate between Benning Heights and Minnesota Ave Metrorail station and will be renamed “U8 Benning Heights Line.”
  • Service between Capitol Heights and Minnesota Ave Metrorail stations will be provided by the NEW V2 and V4 along the route previously served by route U8.

V1 Benning Heights-M Street (NEW)

  • NEW route V1 will operate between Benning Heights and the Bureau of Engraving during weekday peak periods only.

V2, V4 Capitol Heights-Minnesota Avenue (NEW)

  • NEW route V2 will operate between Capitol Heights and Anacostia Metrorail stations on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
  • NEW route V4 will operate between Capitol Heights and Navy Yard-Ballpark Metrorail stations on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

V7, V8, V9 Minnesota Ave-M Street

  • Service will be replaced by new routes U7, V1 and V4.
  • Former V7 service between Deanwood and Minnesota Ave Metrorail stations will be provided by a new route U7.
  • Former service between Minnesota Ave and Navy Yard-Ballpark Metrorail stations will be provided by new route V4 and merged into V2, V4 Capitol Heights-Minnesota Avenue Line.
  • The new V4 will operate along the former V7, V8 routing and will be extended to Capitol Heights Metrorail station via Minnesota Avenue, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, 58th Street, Dix Street, Eastern Avenue, 63rd Street and Southern Avenue.
  • Route V9 will be renamed V1 and will extend to the Bureau of Engraving.
  • Route V7 and V8 service west of Navy Yard-Ballpark Metrorail station will be eliminated.

MARYLAND

81, 82, 83, 86 College Park

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

87 Laurel Express

  • A new southbound weekday trip will depart Main Street and Washington Boulevard in Laurel at 9:00 a.m. and end at Cypress Street and Laurel Lakes Avenue at 9:17 a.m. to improve service to the Towne Centre at Laurel.

89 Laurel

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

B24, B25 Bowie-Belair

  • A new weekday eastbound route B25 trip will depart New Carrollton Metrorail station at 5:50 a.m. for improved service to Bowie.

K11, K12, K13 Forestville

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

NH1, NH3 National Harbor

  • Route NH1 will be rerouted to serve Southern Ave Metrorail station and operate via Southview Apartments.
  • Service to Branch Ave Metrorail station will be discontinued.
  • All route NH3 trips will operate as NH1 trips.

P12 Eastover-Addison Road

  • Route P12 will be rerouted between District Heights and Addison Road Metrorail station via Walker Mill Road & South Addison Road.
  • Service via Walker Mill Road, Shady Glen Drive and Central Avenue will be provided by route V12.
  • Route P12 will no longer loop through United Medical Center. Buses will remain on Southern Avenue.

P17, P18, P19 Oxon Hill-Fort Washington

  • Route P18 trips will be rerouted to serve Southern Avenue Metrorail station via Southern Avenue.
  • Service to South Capitol Street, Firth Sterling Avenue and Anacostia Metrorail station will be discontinued.

V12 District Heights-Suitland

  • Route V12 will be rerouted between District Heights and Addison Road Metrorail station via Walker Mill Road, Shady Glen Drive and Central Avenue.
  • Service along South Addison Road will be provided by route P12.

W13, W14 Bock Road

  • Route W14 trips will be rerouted to serve Southern Ave Metrorail station via Southern Avenue.
  • Service to South Capitol Street, Firth Sterling Avenue and Anacostia Metrorail station will be discontinued.

W15 Camp Springs-Indian Head Highway

  • This route will no longer be operated by Metro. It will now operate as route 37 by TheBus.

VIRGINIA

7A, 7F, 7Y Lincolnia-North Fairlington

  • The weekday northbound route 7A trip leaving Southern Towers at 8:18 a.m. will be changed to a route 7Y trip leaving at 8:21 a.m.  to the Convention Center.
  • The weekday northbound route 7Y trip leaving Southern Towers at 8:30 a.m. will be changed to a 7A trip to the Pentagon Metrorail station.
  • The weekday southbound route 7F trip leaving the Pentagon Metrorail station at 10:30 p.m. will now leave at 10:40 p.m.

11Y Mount Vernon Express

  • New northbound and southbound bus stops will be added to Washington & Pendleton Streets in Alexandria.

15K, 15L Chain Bridge Road

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trips times to improve service.

22A, 22C, 22F Barcroft-South Fairlington (NEW)

  • Route 22A will be rerouted in South Fairlington along the former 25A, 25C, and 25E routing along South Strafford Street, 36th Street and South Utah Street. Additionally, service will operate via Parkfairfax along Valley Drive & Gunston Road during off-peak periods.
  • Weekday off-peak service will operate every 30 minutes.
  • Saturday service will operate every 45 minutes.
  • New Sunday service will operate every 60 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00p.m.  
  • NEW route 22C will operate every 20 minutes during peak periods along the same routing as 22A but will bypass Parkfairfax.
  • NEW route 22F will operate every 20 minutes during peak periods along the former 25C.
  • In South Fairlington, during the peak periods, the combined frequency of routes 22C and 22F will be every 10 minutes.

25A, 25C, 25D, 25E Ballston-Bradlee-Pentagon

  • Service will be replaced with routes 22A, 22C, 22F and 25B.
  • Service between Ballston-MU Metrorail station and Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Alexandria campus will be provided by route 25B seven days a week. See details under 25B Landmark-Ballston.
  • Service between NVCC Alexandria campus, West Braddock Road, North Van Dorn Street and Bradlee Center will be provided by new route 22F during peak periods. Off-peak and weekend service currently provided by routes 25A and 25E will be eliminated.
  • Service between South Fairlington and Pentagon Metrorail station will be provided by routes 22C and 22F during peak periods and by route 22A via Parkfairfax during off-peak periods and weekends.
  • To travel between Bradlee Center, Parkfairfax, and Shirlington, service will be provided by DASH’s AT9 route.

25B Landmark-Ballston

  • The frequency of service between Ballston-MU Metrorail station and Southern Towers will increase to every 15 minutes during peak periods and every 30 minutes during off-peak periods and Saturdays.
  • Service between Van Dorn Street and Ballston-MU Metrorail stations will operate every 30 minutes during peak periods and every 60 minutes during off-peak periods and Saturdays.
  • New Sunday service between Ballston-MU Metrorail station and Southern Towers will operate every 60 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
