Metrobus service changes effective December 14 to shorten wait times, reduce crowding

Metrobus improvements are coming to many routes that serve the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia in order to reduce crowding and shorten wait times in a continuing effort to bring riders a Better Bus experience.  The changes will take effect Sunday, December 14 and mostly include schedule adjustments on existing routes to provide faster travel times and improved on-time performance.  

Among the highlights of service changes effective December 14:

  • In the District of Columbia, MetroExtra Route 37 buses will be rerouted to temporary stops while the Friendship Heights Bus terminal is being repaired. Route 96 buses will detour around the Supreme Court building.
  • In Maryland, Route 84 will be renamed T14. Routes T14 and T18 will add a limited-stop segment between Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail Station and Mount Rainier. New Route Y2 service will operate between Silver Spring, Olney and Medstar Montgomery Medical Center.
  • In Virginia, new station reconstruction to the Dunn Loring Bus bays will be completed and buses will resume service at the Dunn Loring Bus Bay. Westbound Route 28X afternoon trips will be rerouted to serve Tysons Corner Metrorail Station before arriving at Tysons Corner Center.

Below is a complete summary of bus changes effective December 14, 2014:

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

5A DC-Dulles

  • The schedule is revised due to a long-term detour at the Rosslyn Metrorail Station.

37 Wisconsin Avenue

  • Buses will no longer serve the Friendship Heights terminal.
  • Northbound trips to Friendship Heights will end on Wisconsin Avenue at Western Avenue NW.
  • Southbound trips to Archives will begin on Jenifer Street at 44th Street NW.

96 East Capitol Street-Cardozo

  • Between 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., buses will detour around the Supreme Court building. Bus stops located at East Capitol Street and First Street SE and First Street and Maryland Avenue NE will not be served.

D34 Deal Middle School

  • The 4:30 p.m. trip leaving Deal Middle School will now leave at 4:40 p.m.

E6 Chevy Chase 

  • At Friendship Heights Metrorail Station, buses will no longer pick up or drop off passengers at bus bay C. For service toward Knollwood, board at bus bay G.

P6 Anacostia-Eckington

  • Buses will operate via North Capitol Street and K Street between New York Avenue and 5th Street NW in both directions.

W2, W3 United Medical Center-Anacostia

  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

W4 Deanwood-Alabama Avenue

  • A new, weekday 3:10 p.m. northbound trip will depart Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenues SE when public schools are open.

W6, W8 Garfield-Anacostia

  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

X2 Benning Road-H Street

  • Managers will schedule buses to depart every 8 minutes in both directions on weekdays between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

MARYLAND

84 Rhode Island Avenue-New Carrollton

  • Route 84 will be renamed T14.
  • A limited-stop segment will be created between Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail Station and Mount Rainier.
  • Buses are now serving bus bay K at New Carrollton and bus bay D at Rhode Island Metrorail Stations.
  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

87 Laurel Express

  • Additional trips will be added to address overcrowding.
  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

C21, C22, C29 Central Avenue

  • C21, C22 and C29 Pointer Ridge trips will be moved from the relocated stop on the north side of Hall Road past Central Avenue.  All westbound Central Avenue trips will serve the north side of Hall Road.

P17, P19 Oxon Hill-Fort Washington

  • A limited-stop segment will be created between the Capital Beltway and Nationals Park.
  • Boarding and exiting restrictions will be removed.

T18 Annapolis Road

  • A limited-stop segment will be created between Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail Station and Mount Rainier.
  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

W13 Bock Road

  • A limited-stop segment will be created between the Capital Beltway and Nationals Park.
  • Boarding and exiting restrictions will be removed.

Y7, Y8 Georgia Avenue-Maryland

  • NEW Route Y2 will operate between Silver Spring, Olney and Medstar Montgomery Medical Center.
  • Route Y4 is discontinued.
  • Route Y7 service will not change.
  • Route Y8 will operate between Silver Spring, Leisure World, Olney and Medstar Montgomery Medical Center on weekdays only.
  • Service frequencies will not change, and new schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

VIRGINIA

1A, 1B, 1Z Wilson Boulevard-Vienna
1C Fair Oaks-Dunn Loring

  • Routes 1A, 1C and 1Z will serve the Fairfax County Human Services Center on Willow Oaks Corporate Drive.
  • 1B buses serving the temporary terminal on Prosperity Avenue at Gallows Road will resume service to the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station bus bays.
  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

2A Washington Boulevard-Dunn Loring
2B Fair Oaks-Jermantown Road
2T Tysons Corner-Dunn Loring

  • Buses serving the temporary terminal on Prosperity Avenue at Gallows Road will resume service to the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station bus bays.
  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

3A Lee Highway-Falls Church

  • The schedule is revised due to a long-term detour at Rosslyn Metrorail Station.
  • The last weekday trip leaving Rosslyn Metrorail Station at 12:30 a.m. will be adjusted to leave at 12:35 a.m.

5A DC-Dulles

  • The schedule is revised due to a long-term detour at Rosslyn Metrorail Station.

15K, 15L Chain Bridge Road

  • The schedule is revised due to a long-term detour at Rosslyn Metrorail Station.

28X Leesburg Pike Limited

  • Westbound p.m. trips will be rerouted to serve Tysons Corner Metrorail Station before arriving at Tysons Corner Center.
  • New schedules will reflect trip time adjustments.

38B Ballston-Farragut Square

  • The schedule is revised due to a long-term detour at Rosslyn Metrorail Station.

S80 Springfield Circulator-Metro Park Shuttle

  • The trips leaving Franconia-Springfield Metrorail Station at 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. are adjusted for customers transferring from VRE trains.
