Metro to adjust select bus routes in DC, Virginia

September 25 service changes to match customer demand, reflect traffic conditions

Metro will make several adjustments to bus service, effective September 25, on routes in the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia.  The changes are intended to enhance reliability, improve connections with Metrorail service and match ridership demand.

District of Columbia Service Changes

  • Metro will introduce a new route, number 74, between Gallery Place/Convention Center and the Southwest Waterfront.  The new service, which replaces the southern portion of routes 70 and 71, will operate daily between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m., with service running every 18 minutes during weekday peak periods and every 24 minutes at other times.  More information
  • Bus Route 70 (Georgia Avenue-7th Street Line) will operate between Silver Spring and Archives Metrorail stations. During weekday peak periods, buses will operate more frequently -- every 10 minutes, rather than every 12 minutes. All trips will be designated as Bus Route 70; the number 71 will be discontinued.  View schedule
  • On routes 90, 92 and 93 (U Street-Garfield Line) Metro will introduce a new approach to operating buses on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.  Rather than using a traditional timetable, buses will operate based on "time frequency" -- every 15 minutes on Route 90 between Anacostia Station and Duke Ellington Bridge and every 15 minutes on Route 92 between Congress Heights Station and 14th & U streets, NW.  (At stops served by both bus routes, service will operate every 7-8 minutes.) Dedicated street supervisors will manage the flow of buses to minimize bus "bunching" and maintain a 15-minute frequency at each of the terminals.  View timetable
  • Metro will introduce two new PM weekday westbound trips on the 32 route (Pennsylvania Avenue Line) departing Southern Avenue Metrorail station at 4:16 p.m. and 4:46 p.m. to reduce crowding.  The buses will travel to Eastern Market.
  • On the H6 route (Brookland-Fort Lincoln Line), several early morning trips will be adjusted to provide improved connections to Red Line trains at Brookland Station. View timetable
  • All service on the K1 route (Takoma-Walter Reed Line) will be discontinued due to the BRAC plan for relocation of Walter Reed Army Medical Center facilities to Maryland and Virginia.
  • Route N8 (Tenleytown-Glover Park Line) will be discontinued to due to low ridership.
  • Route N2 (Massachusetts Avenue Line) will be rerouted between Friendship Heights Station and Ward Circle as a partial replacement for route N8.
  • On routes N3 and N4 (Massachusetts Avenue Line), several morning departures from the Friendship Heights terminal will be adjusted to reduce congestion at the terminal.

In addition to these service changes, Metro will discontinue the Anacostia special fare, as previously announced. As a result, bus fares on several routes will be adjusted to be consistent with Metrobus fares elsewhere on the system. Effective September 25, fares will change from $1 to $1.50 for SmarTrip customers and $1.70 for cash-paying customers on routes 94, A2, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, M8, M9, W2, W3, W6, W8 as well as for stops at or south of Good Hope Road on routes 90, B2, P1, P2, P6 and U2.  Customers who transfer between bus and rail will not notice a fare change, because the SmarTrip discount for customers transferring at Anacostia or Congress Heights stations will increase from 50¢ to $1.

Northern Virginia Service Changes

  • Route 3Y (Lee Highway-Farragut Square) will be extended westward from Lee Heights (Lee Highway and Woodrow/Albemarle Sts.) to Lee Highway & George Mason Drive/Harrison St. The route extension will provide more customers with a direct trip to Farragut Square. In addition, Metro will add two trips on weekday mornings and evenings. View timetable
  • Route 7A (Lincolnia-North Fairlington Line) service will be discontinued via Landmark Center after 11 p.m. on weekends and several late-night trip adjustments will be made to trips leaving Lincolnia Road/Quantrell Ave. View timetable
