MEDIA ADVISORY: Metro’s Silver Line Extension to Washington Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County to open November 15

On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., Metro will celebrate the opening of the Silver Line Extension with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Washington Dulles International Airport Station with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, federal, state, and local officials, Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke, Metro Board members, and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority President and CEO Jack Potter. The extension will expand the existing Silver Line, offering six new Metro stations in Virginia and bringing Metrorail service to Washington Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County for the first time. 

Due to space constraints, the event is not open to the general public and media must RSVP to metronews@wmata.com by 10 a.m. on Monday, November 14 to attend the event. A live feed will be made available for the event and will also be livestreamed at wmata.com. 

The event timeline is as follows: 

9:30 a.m.: Check-in 
10:00 a.m.: All media must be in place. Television media will have designated risers and print media and photographers will have designated seating. 
10:30 a.m.: Speaking program begins 
11:35 a.m.: Ribbon cutting on station platform. Event ends. 
11:55 a.m.: Train with dignitaries departs Washington Dulles International Airport for Ashburn and Innovation Center stations. NOTE: Due to space constraints the event train ride is limited to invited guests only. Video and photos will be provided via media pool only. 

About Silver Ticket Express Train: 
An express Silver Line train will depart Wiehle-Reston East station at 1:15 p.m. to carry ‘Silver Ticket’ holders to Ashburn. The train will not make any stops prior to Ashburn. Media must RSVP to metronews@wmata.com by 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 14 to ride the ‘Silver Ticket’ train. 

The first passenger train from Ashburn to Downtown Largo will depart Ashburn shortly before 2 p.m., making all stops.

Free parking will be available at the airport in surface lots and the covered parking garage. Approaching the destination, look for signs to “Event Parking.” Parking attendants will be available to guide you. Take elevator to LL or walk down the ramp in the garage to get to the Metro station. Check in will be just past the elevators on LL.
