Metro to begin on-demand transportation program for late-night commuters July 1

Metro today opened registration for a new program to support late-night workers who travel between midnight and 4 a.m. Beginning July 1, qualified workers, such as those in the hospitality or healthcare industries, can receive a $3 subsidy toward a shared ride on Lyft for trips taken between their home and workplace.

Known as the After-Hours Commuter Service, the program will provide qualified participants up to 10 discounted rides per week within Metro’s service area. The program, a one-year pilot with a budget capped at $1 million, was created to support late-night workers affected by changes in Metrorail’s operating hours to support improved maintenance, safety and reliability.

“This program will provide late-night workers with a more affordable transportation option during overnight hours as we advance essential maintenance programs that improve safety and reliability,” said Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld.

Registration is required to participate in the program. Customers can apply online at wmata.com/afterhours and once approved will receive a pass each month in the Lyft app on their mobile device. Riders may pre-enroll in the program through 5:00 p.m., Friday, June 28, in order to begin using the service starting July 1. After June 28, approved customers will begin receiving discounted late-night travel starting on the first day of the following month.

Enrollment in the program will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis and is open to Metro customers with a registered SmarTrip card who travel between midnight and 4 a.m. Periodic audits will be conducted to ensure participants meet the qualifications for the program.

The pilot program is scheduled for one year or until its $1 million budget is expended. At the conclusion of the pilot, Metro will evaluate customer feedback, utilization, and other factors to determine whether to continue the program into the future.
