Metro opens new Andrews Bus Garage, ends cash-free pilot effective with bus service changes June 23

Metro will open its new bus garage at Andrews Federal Center beginning Sunday, June 23, in Forestville, Maryland. The Andrews Bus Garage will hold up to 175 buses that will operate in Southern Prince George’s County and Southeast DC. The start of operations at the new 296,000 square foot facility is one of several service changes scheduled to take effect Sunday.

In the District, Metro’s cash-free pilot on Route 79 MetroExtra will end, giving customers the option of paying with a SmarTrip card or cash.

Metro has also added supplemental service on a number of bus routes to serve as travel alternatives for the six closed stations in Virginia south of National Airport for the Platform Improvement Project, including the 8S, 8Z, 11Y and Metroway. These changes which took effect May 25 will remain in effect for the duration of the project through September 8.
