Adopt a Bus Stop
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is seeking volunteers
and groups to adopt a bus stop or stops. Volunteers will have their names placed
at the bus stop and will be able to assist the community by keeping the bus
stops clean, accessible and free of debris.
Who can apply?
Anyone can adopt a Bus Stop or Stops; groups, individuals, private companies, public agencies, churches, schools, school groups, civic organizations/groups, scout groups and more. People of all ages are welcome to join in the effort! Bus Stop adoption is simple, and when everyone joins this environmentally conscious program the region becomes a better place to live and work. With more than 12,000 bus stops your effort will help to demonstrate your pride in your community.
How long is the contract?
You may choose an adoption term of 1 or 2 years.
Any rules or regulations?
- You must agree to pick up litter around the designated bus stop for the length of your adoption term
- Return the items given to you after the adoption term
- You agree not to plant flowers, paint or alter the Bus Stop/Shelter
- Abide by WMATA's legal agreement

It's simple! Simply read and complete the online application form. Once we have processed your application, our staff will contact you with further details.
You may also call our Adopt-A-Bus Stop personnel at 202-962-1107. Metro staff will help you select a bus stop and will coordinate distribution of the materials needed to keep stops clean and litter-free.
