Latest edition of Dear Fellow Rider brochure hits the "Stands" at Metro tomorrow

CEO Richard A. White Emphasizes Metro's Continuing Strong Commitment to Safety

On Wednesday, June 19, during the evening peak period, Metro employees will hand out the latest edition of Metro Chief Executive Officer Richard A. White's Dear Fellow Rider. This brochure is one of the vehicles for providing regular communication from the CEO to Metro customers, and for inviting their suggestions on a number of topics related to providing the best possible customer service to passengers. The brochure will be handed to customers at some of Metro's busiest rail stations.

The latest edition of the brochure discusses Metro's strong and continued commitment to safety, post-September 11, and in light of the recent rash of non-specific threats aimed at various sectors of American life, including transportation.

"We're a different country since 9/11," Mr. White states in the brochure. "We've learned that no place in America is immune to terrorism or the various threats of terrorism, [as] it seems every week brings a new tip or rumor of potential, yet unspecified danger.

"Metro's commitment to safety was a top priority long before 9/11, [and] our commitment has only strengthened, and it remains steadfast today," he added.

The brochure outlines those steps Metro has taken or is taking to ensure its steadfast, unswerving commitment to safety, including the following actions:

  • Conducted an independent security assessment of our system;
  • Making several capital investments in equipment, some of which are not used anywhere else in the world, to further strengthen our ability to monitor, detect, and respond to unusual occurrences;
  • Continuing to assess each new threat with levelheaded vigilance, taking steps to enhance safety wherever needed, and keeping customers informed along the way;
  • Participating in emergency response coordination efforts under the guidance of the region's Council of Governments;
  • Maintaining regular ongoing contact with various law enforcement and intelligence agencies for the latest credible information;
  • Continuing the deployment of Metro Transit Police officers in uniform and plain clothes to patrol Metrobuses and Metrorail trains and stations.

"Helping our police officers are 10,000 other Metro employees who also keep an eye out for unusual activity. With your vigilance and help, we are a true example of safety in numbers," Mr. White ends the brochure.

Customers are encouraged to become familiar with evacuation procedures on trains and buses where information is posted near the exits. In addition, they are advised to contact a Metro Transit Police officer or other uniformed Metro employee if they see unattended packages or observe suspicious activity. In addition, customers may call the Metro Transit Police Department on its 24-hour line at 202-962-2121, or call 911.

Metro is also preparing to place four more "Safety in Numbers"posters in trains and stations, showing employees in their natural work environments with corresponding safety messages.
